Two Swiss routes into nursing: HES bachelor and HF diploma
In French-speaking Switzerland, nurses mostly train for a bachelor at a university of applied sciences (HES), at La Source or HESAV in Lausanne or the Geneva School of Health. In German-speaking cantons the ES/HF nursing diploma remains widespread and equivalent for practice.
Why the Swiss Red Cross decides on foreign nursing diplomas
Acting on a federal mandate, the Swiss Red Cross compares a foreign diploma with the Swiss title under the ordinance on the recognition of health professions. It reviews the level, length and content of training, then enters the recognised title in the federal register.
Nursing diplomas from the European Union
The French state diploma in general care nursing is in principle covered by the recognition rules of the free movement agreement. The procedure is still compulsory, but it usually moves faster than an application based on a diploma from a non-EU country.
Non-European training and compensation measures
For a diploma earned in the Maghreb, West Africa or Lebanon, the Swiss Red Cross may require an adaptation placement or an aptitude test. Under the federal ordinance, the candidate pays the cost of these compensation measures personally.
Language level expected from nurses
Recognition requires proof of sufficient knowledge of an official language. Hospitals expect fluent French in Geneva or Lausanne, German in Bern and Zurich and Italian in Ticino, because safe handovers between care teams depend on clear communication.
University hospitals and cantonal hospital networks
The HUG in Geneva, the CHUV in Lausanne, Bern's Inselspital and the cantonal hospitals of Fribourg, Valais and Neuchâtel hire throughout the year. Intensive care, operating theatres and psychiatry especially seek specialists, as our hub on healthcare jobs in Switzerland shows.
Home care services and nursing homes (EMS)
Imad in Geneva, the Vaud cantonal associations and the Spitex organisations in German-speaking Switzerland give nurses clinical assessment and care coordination in patients' homes. Nursing homes (EMS) employ unit nurses who supervise care assistants and auxiliary staff.
Shift patterns and night duty on the wards
Hospital wards run on three shifts, including night watches, weekends and public holidays. The Labour Act regulates these hours and provides compensation in time off, explained in more detail in our guide to night work in Switzerland.
Cross-border nurses from Haute-Savoie and Ain
The HUG and Geneva's private clinics employ many nurses living in Annemasse, Saint-Julien or Gex. With a G permit they fall under Swiss employment law and can choose between Swiss health insurance and the French option.
The 2021 nursing care initiative
Approved by voters in November 2021, the initiative for strong nursing care led the Confederation and the cantons to fund more training places. A second phase deals with working conditions and staffing levels on hospital wards and in care homes.
Postgraduate nursing specialisations
Postgraduate studies in intensive care, anaesthesia or emergency nursing, as well as the master in advanced nursing practice, lead to better-graded posts. Hospitals often fund these courses in return for a commitment to stay, as they do for midwives in Switzerland.
Nurse salaries set by cantonal pay scales
In the public sector, a nurse's salary follows the job class on the cantonal pay scale or the hospital collective labour agreement (CCT). In Geneva, the minimum wage of 24,59 CHF gross per hour is only a floor, far below these scales.
Steps to start working as a nurse in Switzerland
- Submit a recognition application to the Swiss Red Cross with your diploma, training curriculum and licence to practise from your home country.
- Prove a sufficient level of French, German or Italian, ideally with a DELF, DALF or Goethe certificate.
- Complete the adaptation placement or aptitude test if the Swiss Red Cross decision requires one.
- Prepare a Swiss-style CV with photo, wards worked on, number of beds, care software used and references from nurse managers.
- Apply to hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and home care services in your target canton.
- Obtain a B or G permit with your employer and, for independent practice, authorisation from the cantonal doctor or health department.

- DELF, DALF or Goethe language certificate

Why nursing applications in Switzerland fail
- Applying before starting recognition with the Swiss Red Cross, even though an employer cannot give a nursing post to someone without a recognised title.
- Underestimating the language requirement in German-speaking Switzerland, where handovers and care records are all in German.
- Leaving out details of wards, specialties and procedures performed, which nurse managers compare against the job profile.
- Confusing gross and net pay by forgetting deductions for AVS (old-age insurance), AC, LPP and withholding tax.
- Accepting an agency offer that charges fees for a contract or permit, a practice that breaks Swiss placement rules.
Questions from nurses planning a move to Switzerland
How long does recognition of a nursing diploma take?
It depends on how complete the file is and where the diploma comes from. A European title is generally processed faster than a diploma from a non-EU country, which may require compensation measures. The Swiss Red Cross states current processing times when you apply.
Can I work as a care assistant while waiting for recognition?
Some employers temporarily hire foreign nurses as care assistants, paid at the corresponding rate. Whether this is possible depends on the institution and the canton, so the arrangement should be clearly set out in writing in the employment contract.
Do hospital nurses need a cantonal licence to practise?
No, an employed nurse works under the responsibility of the institution. The cantonal licence to practise applies to independent practice, for example home care nurses who bill health insurers directly in their own name.
Which cantons hire the most French-speaking nurses?
Geneva and Vaud, with their university hospitals and private clinics, recruit on a large scale, followed by Valais, Fribourg and Neuchâtel. In the Bernese Jura and Biel/Bienne, being bilingual in French and German is a real advantage.
