A tightly clustered watchmaking map
La Chaux-de-Fonds, Le Locle, the Vallée de Joux, Biel, Grenchen and Geneva host most of the manufactures. The Jura and Bernese Jura are also home to many specialist suppliers of cases, dials and hands, covered in our hub on Swiss watch industry jobs.
The CFC in watchmaking and its specialisations
The CFC (Federal VET Diploma) in watchmaking takes three or four years depending on the specialisation, at a full-time school or through a dual apprenticeship. The repair track prepares for after-sales service and restoration, the production track for assembly in a manufacture.
Watchmaking operator AFP
The AFP (Federal VET Certificate) for watchmaking operators, earned in two years, prepares for repetitive assembly tasks in the workshop. It then allows a shortened route to the CFC, a bridge valued by companies in the Bernese Jura and Neuchâtel.
The leading technical schools
The watchmaking schools of Geneva, Le Locle, Porrentruy and Le Sentier train sought-after apprentices every year. Adult candidates can aim for full-time training, but places are limited and the entrance examinations are selective.
Manufactures, groups and independent workshops
Swatch Group in Biel, Richemont and its houses in the Vallée de Joux, Rolex in Geneva and Biel, and Audemars Piguet in Le Brassus sit alongside independent haute horlogerie workshops. Large groups offer more posts, smaller firms more variety.
Repairs and after-sales service
Brand service centres in Geneva, Biel and Neuchâtel hire repair watchmakers to service, diagnose and restore mechanical watches. Experience with complicated calibres, chronographs or perpetual calendars makes a clear difference when they recruit.
Related trades in casing and finishing
Polishing, gem setting, casing and quality control complete the value chain. A watchmaker who also masters finishing can move into roles as a watch polisher in Switzerland, which are common in the case workshops of the Jura.
The watch industry collective agreement
The collective agreement signed between the employers' Convention patronale de l'industrie horlogère and the Unia and Syna unions sets minimum starting wages by region and qualification, as well as working hours and the thirteenth salary.
Cross-border workers from the Doubs and Pays de Gex
Many watchmakers live in Morteau, Villers-le-Lac or Pontarlier and cross the border every day to Le Locle or the Vallée de Joux. The G permit, taxes and health insurance are explained on our page about working in Switzerland as a cross-border commuter.
French diplomas compared with the CFC
A French CAP or arts and crafts diploma in watchmaking is not automatically treated as equal to the CFC. SEFRI, the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation, can issue a level certificate, but manufactures mainly judge practical skill at the bench.
Business cycles and short-time work
Watch exports rise and fall with Chinese and American demand. In downturns, companies in Neuchâtel and Jura use reduced working hours, then rehire quickly, which makes keeping a close eye on the market essential for job seekers.
Cantonal minimum wages in the Jura Arc
Neuchâtel sets a minimum wage of 21,35 CHF gross per hour in 2026, Jura 21,40 CHF and Geneva 24,59 CHF. The watch agreement's pay scales and experience generally place a qualified watchmaker above these floors.
Steps to join a Swiss watch manufacture
- Assess your level against the CFC in watchmaking, production or repair, and if needed request a level certificate from SEFRI.
- Build a portfolio of work: dismantled calibres, services carried out, photos of finishing and a list of tools and machines you master.
- Prepare a Swiss CV with photo, employment references and contactable workshop managers.
- Target the job hubs of Le Locle, the Vallée de Joux, Biel or Geneva according to where you live.
- Pass the practical bench test, often decisive, by showing precision, cleanliness and respect for tolerances.
- Obtain the G or B permit with the employer's support from the cantonal population office.

The file manufactures expect
- CV with photo and a cover letter tailored to the brand
- CFC in watchmaking or foreign diploma with a level certificate
- Employment references from previous workshops
- Photo portfolio of work and calibres mastered
- Identity card or passport and any residence permit
- Criminal record extract, often required for valuable pieces
Common mistakes by watchmaker applicants
- Sending a CV without details of the calibres, movements and operations mastered, when workshop managers recruit for precise technical skills.
- Neglecting the practical bench test in the belief that the diploma is enough, when it often weighs more than your schooling.
- Ignoring confidentiality clauses and posting photos of a previous employer's movements on social media.
- Applying only to the big Geneva brands while overlooking the suppliers of the Bernese Jura, which hire more regularly.
- Accepting a job in the Jura Arc without planning for winter commutes and the travel costs of cross-border work.
Questions about the watchmaking trade in Switzerland
Is a French CAP in watchmaking enough to get hired in Switzerland?
It can be enough for assembly or casing posts, especially with experience. For repairing complex calibres, manufactures expect a level comparable to the Swiss CFC, checked through a practical test and detailed employment references.
Can I become a watchmaker in Switzerland as a career changer?
Yes, adult training routes exist, notably through article 32 of the Vocational Training Ordinance, which allows people with recognised experience to obtain the CFC. The cantonal guidance office explains the conditions that apply in each canton.
Which region hires the most watchmakers?
The Jura Arc, from Geneva to Biel via the Vallée de Joux, Le Locle and La Chaux-de-Fonds, holds most of the jobs. Geneva attracts the haute horlogerie houses, while Biel and Grenchen focus on industrial production.
Does the watch industry agreement apply to every company?
It binds the companies that belong to the signatory employers' association. Some firms do not join, so it is worth asking at interview which agreement or staff regulations apply, and how many salary payments are made each year.
