Sanitary installer in Switzerland: the plumbing trade, minimum wages and sites

In Switzerland a plumber is officially a sanitary installer and, where the building services collective agreement applies, earns in 2026 at least 4600 francs gross per month after the CFC apprenticeship, then 5100 francs from the third year.

Sanitary installer in Switzerland: the plumbing trade, minimum wages and sites

Plumber or sanitary installer?

The word plumber is understood everywhere, but Swiss job ads mostly say installateur sanitaire, monteur sanitaire or Sanitärinstallateur in German-speaking Switzerland. Searching with these three terms greatly increases the number of vacancies found on job portals and company websites.

The sanitary installer CFC

The CFC (Federal VET Diploma) trains apprentices to fit water pipes, drainage, sanitary fixtures and gas installations. The dual apprenticeship, described on our page about apprenticeships in Switzerland, alternates between company, vocational school and inter-company courses.

The AFP, a faster way into the trade

The AFP (Federal VET Certificate) prepares trainees for simple installation work under the supervision of a qualified installer. The building services collective agreement sets its minimum at 4100 francs per month in 2026 at the end of training.

A collective agreement signed with suissetec

The suissetec association and the Unia and Syna unions concluded the agreement for the Swiss building envelope and building services sector. Some French-speaking cantons apply their own building metalwork agreement, so check which one covers your canton.

2026 minimum wages by experience

According to the 2026 suissetec table, a CFC installer moves from 4600 francs at the end of the apprenticeship to 5100 francs from the third year, then 5300 francs from the fifth. The hourly wage equals the monthly amount divided by 173.3.

Installers without a recognised qualification

An installer without a certificate, aged at least 20, also has a contractual minimum: 4000 francs in the first year, 4100 francs from the third and 4300 francs from the fifth. Getting a foreign diploma assessed often moves you into a higher category.

Renovation, new builds and emergency repairs

Firms in Vaud and Geneva split their work between new building sites, bathroom renovations and repair services for property management agencies. Evening and weekend on-call duty is common; the related allowances must appear in the contract or company rules.

Heating, heat pumps and solar thermal

The replacement of oil boilers by heat pumps, encouraged by the Buildings Programme, creates strong demand in Bern, Fribourg and Valais. The plumber works there alongside the electrician in Switzerland and heating engineers on the same installations.

SSIGE standards and drinking water

Drinking water and gas installations follow the guidelines of the Swiss Gas and Water Industry Association, SSIGE. Municipal suppliers such as Services industriels de Genève inspect connections; a non-compliant joint or material can block the acceptance of the work.

Temporary assignments on large sites

Temporary employment agencies in Switzerland place many sanitary installers on building sites around Lake Geneva and Basel. The staff leasing collective agreement guarantees minimum conditions, and a long assignment often leads to a permanent position.

Progressing to the federal certificate and master diploma

After a few years, an installer can aim for the federal professional certificate of sanitary site manager, then the federal master's diploma. The building services planner CFC opens another path towards engineering offices, which are numerous in Lausanne and Zurich.

Cross-border workers and site safety

Many installers live in the Pays de Gex, the Chablais or the Sundgau. Suva's vital rules on scaffolding, welding and asbestos in older buildings apply from the very first day, whatever the installer's status.

Path to working as a plumber in Switzerland

  1. Compare your CAP, vocational baccalaureate or foreign diploma with the sanitary installer CFC and request a SEFRI level certificate for 350 francs.
  2. List your skills precisely: press fitting, welding, gas, heating, heat pumps, plan reading, with the equipment brands you know.
  3. Write a Swiss-style CV with photo, employment references, driving licence and contact details of former employers.
  4. Apply to plumbing firms, property management agencies for repair work and temporary agencies specialising in finishing trades.
  5. Check in your contract the salary category of the applicable collective agreement, the thirteenth-month salary and on-call allowances.
  6. Have your G, L or B permit issued by the cantonal population office before your first day on site.

Documents requested from sanitary installers

  • Swiss-style CV with photo and list of techniques mastered
  • Employment references from previous firms
  • CFC, AFP or foreign diploma with SEFRI level certificate
  • Welding or gas training certificates
  • Driving licence, often required for repair work
  • Residence permit, G permit or passport
Pitfalls to avoid as a plumber in Switzerland
  • Accepting a salary below the collective agreement minimum because you do not know the category matching your training and years of experience.
  • Searching only for the word plumber and missing ads published as installateur sanitaire or monteur sanitaire.
  • Starting work on a Swiss site before the G or L permit is issued, risking a fine for both the employer and you.
  • Ignoring Swiss drinking water and gas guidelines, which suppliers check when accepting installations.
  • Answering a fake offer that demands file or housing fees before hiring: a genuine Swiss company never asks candidates for money.

Plumber in Switzerland: common candidate questions

Is a French CAP in plumbing enough to work in Switzerland?

As the trade is not regulated, a CAP lets you apply without formal recognition. To be classified as a qualified installer under the collective agreement, a SEFRI level certificate and detailed employment references help you negotiate the right salary category.

Is the Geneva minimum wage added to the CCT minimum?

No, they are not added together: the employee is entitled to the higher applicable amount. In Geneva the cantonal minimum wage is 24.59 francs per hour in 2026, but the contractual minimums for a qualified installer are generally higher.

Do you need German to work as a plumber in Basel or Zurich?

On a building site basic German is sometimes enough at first, but repair work in private homes requires understanding Swiss German. A language course with a Goethe A2 or B1 certificate significantly widens the range of accessible jobs.

Can a plumber from outside the European Union get a permit?

It is difficult: permits for third-country nationals are subject to quotas, with 4500 B permits and 4000 L permits in 2026, and reserved mainly for highly qualified profiles. The employer must also prove that no Swiss or European candidate is suitable.
