Working in warehousing and logistics in Switzerland

To work as a logistics operative in Switzerland, target the distribution centres of major retailers, Swiss Post or e-commerce firms, and ideally present a logistician CFC or AFP together with recognised forklift training.

Working in warehousing and logistics in Switzerland

Receiving, storing and picking orders

A logistics operative checks incoming deliveries, records stock in the management system, picks orders with a scanner or voice-picking system and loads lorries. In Swiss warehouses, traceability and inventory accuracy are monitored very closely by supervisors.

The country's major distribution centres

The platforms of Migros and Coop, Swiss Post sorting centres, carriers such as Planzer or Galliker and e-commerce warehouses in Aargau account for most jobs. In French-speaking Switzerland, the Aclens, Satigny and Villeneuve areas recruit regularly.

The three-year logistician CFC

The benchmark qualification is the logistician CFC (Federal VET Diploma), a three-year course with a warehousing, distribution or transport focus. Adults with five years of work experience can take this CFC through Article 32 of the Vocational Training Ordinance.

Logistician AFP and starting without a diploma

The two-year logistician AFP (Federal VET Certificate) suits more hands-on profiles and later leads into the CFC. Many operatives nevertheless start without any qualification through a temporary assignment, as our guide to jobs without a diploma in Switzerland shows.

Industry-recognised forklift training

Driving a forklift requires training that meets Suva requirements, offered notably by the Swiss Association for Vocational Training in Logistics. A foreign forklift licence is not always accepted as it stands. Our page on forklift driver jobs in Switzerland covers this.

Workplace safety and mandatory equipment

Safety shoes, a high-visibility vest and respect for pedestrian walkways are checked from day one. Suva, the accident insurer, publishes strict rules on lifting loads and racking, and an accident caused by negligence can end an assignment immediately.

Shift work, nights and Sundays

Food distribution centres often run two or three shifts. Night and Sunday work requires a permit from SECO (State Secretariat for Economic Affairs) or the canton and entitles staff to compensation in time or pay under the Labour Act.

Temporary assignments and the staffing CCT

Many hires go through recruitment agencies, which are bound by the staffing services CCT (collective labour agreement) setting minimum wages by region and qualification. Our page on temporary work in Switzerland explains how an assignment can turn into a permanent contract.

IT systems and barcode reading

Swiss warehouses use SAP EWM or similar warehouse management software, handheld terminals and sometimes automated shuttle systems. Being able to read a delivery note in German is a real asset, even in a warehouse in Vaud or Geneva.

Moving up to team leader or planner

After a few years, the federal diploma of logistics specialist opens doors to team leader or dock manager roles. Some operatives move on to flow planning and supply chain planner jobs in industry around Basel or Zurich.

Minimum wage and benchmarks by canton

In Geneva, no operative may be paid less than CHF 24.59 gross per hour in 2026, and in Neuchâtel CHF 21.35. Elsewhere, the employer's CCT or the staffing CCT sets the floor, which you should check before signing anything.

EU nationals, cross-border workers and third countries

EU citizens easily obtain an L, B or G permit for this job, and many warehouses in Geneva and Basel employ cross-border workers. For third-country nationals, this role generally does not meet the qualification requirements of Swiss immigration law.

Your route to a job in a Swiss warehouse

  1. Check that your nationality gives you access to the Swiss labour market, then identify logistics zones near your home or the border.
  2. Take forklift training recognised in Switzerland if the employer or agency does not accept your foreign certificate.
  3. Prepare a Swiss CV with photo, stating tonnages, picking rates, software used and the machines you have operated.
  4. Register with several recruitment agencies specialising in logistics and stay reachable for assignments offered the day before.
  5. Ask for a written employment reference at the end of every assignment to build a credible file for a permanent position.
  6. Then consider the logistician CFC through recognition of prior learning or Article 32 to improve your pay and responsibilities.

File expected by warehouses and agencies

  • CV with photo and a short cover letter
  • Employment references from previous jobs
  • Forklift training certificate or logistician CFC or AFP
  • Passport or ID card and residence or G permit
  • Criminal record extract for some sorting centres or sensitive warehouses
  • Contact details for two reachable referees
  • Driving licence if deliveries are part of the job
Mistakes that rule out logistics applicants
  • Assuming a French CACES or other foreign certificate lets you drive a forklift in Switzerland without checking employer and Suva requirements.
  • Systematically refusing shift work or Saturdays when most distribution centres operate on rotating schedules.
  • Accepting undeclared cash-in-hand work, which leaves you without accident cover or AVS pension contributions.
  • Neglecting employment references from short assignments, even though they are the main proof of experience for a Swiss recruiter.
  • Answering an advert that requires you to pay for training or a badge before starting work.

Common questions about logistics work in Switzerland

Do I need German to work in logistics in Switzerland?

In French-speaking Switzerland, French is often enough for a warehouse job. However, the largest distribution centres are in Aargau, Solothurn and Zurich, where basic German quickly becomes essential to understand safety instructions.

Can a logistics temp get a permanent contract after agency work?

It is common. After a few months of successful assignments, companies often offer an open-ended contract. The staffing services CCT also includes rules on the client company taking over the temporary worker.

Is the logistician CFC essential?

Not to get started, but it makes a difference to pay and access to team leader roles. Working adults can prepare for it in evening classes, sometimes with financial support from the canton or their employer.

Can the ORP pay for forklift training?

A jobseeker registered with the ORP (regional employment office) can request a training measure if it genuinely improves their chances of placement. The decision lies with the ORP adviser and depends on the regional market, so discuss it before enrolling.
