Polymechanic, production mechanic, mechanics practitioner
The polymechanic CFC (Federal VET Diploma) takes four years and covers machining, assembly and programming. The production mechanic CFC takes three years, and the mechanics practitioner AFP two. Swiss job ads use these titles rather than industrial mechanic.
The MEM industry collective agreement
The agreement signed by Swissmem with Unia, Syna and other partners covers the machinery, electrical equipment and metal industries. It sets a 40-hour working week and minimum wages that are indexed and differentiated across three regions of the country.
2026 minimum wages by region
Under the 2026 supplementary agreement, a skilled employee earns at least 4463 francs in region A, 4192 in region B and 4028 in region C, paid thirteen times a year. The qualification supplement amounts to 300 francs per month.
Workers without a recognised qualification
An operator without a recognised title receives at least 4163, 3892 or 3728 francs depending on the region. A foreign mechanic whose diploma has not yet been accepted may be placed in this band; negotiate the move to skilled status when you start.
CNC machining and programming
Workshops in the Jura Arc, the Vallée de Joux and eastern Switzerland look for setters on machining centres and Swiss-type lathes. Command of Heidenhain, Fanuc or Siemens controls and of CAM software is often required in the job advertisements.
Links with watchmaking micromechanics
Watch industry subcontractors in Neuchâtel, the Bernese Jura and Biel recruit mechanics used to tolerances measured in microns. The specific requirements of this field are set out on our page about the related trade of precision mechanic in Switzerland.
Production line maintenance
In Basel chemicals, the Vaud food industry or cement works, mechanics handle preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and parts replacement. These posts often include on-call duty; the closely related profile of maintenance technician in Switzerland is also worth reading.
Foreign diplomas and the SEFRI certificate
The trade is not regulated: a French bac pro or BTS, or a German Facharbeiter qualification, is enough to apply. A SEFRI level certificate, costing 350 francs, compares the diploma with the CFC and supports placement in the skilled category.
Cross-border workers in Jura industry
The canton of Jura, Neuchâtel and the Vaud Jura welcome many French cross-border workers in their mechanical workshops. The Jura cantonal minimum wage of 21,40 francs per hour also applies, but the MEM agreement is generally more favourable where it binds the employer.
Federal diploma and higher technical school
After the CFC, a mechanic can aim for a federal professional diploma in the sector or a technician HF diploma in mechanical engineering. Technical colleges in French-speaking Switzerland, for example in Sainte-Croix, offer part-time courses, often in the evening or on Saturdays.
Machine safety and standards
Suva checks machine guarding, the wearing of personal protective equipment and the handling of cutting fluids. Mechanics must know lockout procedures before any intervention, and negligence can engage their own liability as well as that of the employer.
Languages in Swiss workshops
In German-speaking Switzerland, drawings, setting sheets and work orders are written in German. In the Jura Arc, French is often enough, but technical English helps with machine documentation. Openings in the sector appear on our page on engineering jobs in Switzerland.
Hiring route for an industrial mechanic in Switzerland
- Identify the Swiss title that matches your profile: polymechanic, production mechanic or mechanics practitioner.
- Request a SEFRI level certificate to position your foreign diploma against the CFC.
- Write a Swiss CV with a photo listing machines, numerical controls, materials machined and usual tolerances.
- Apply to Swissmem member companies, watch industry subcontractors and temporary agencies specialising in industry.
- Check that the contract meets the regional MEM minimum and specifies shift hours and on-call duty.
- Obtain the L, B or G permit from the cantonal population office before starting the job.
2026 MEM wages and relocation costs
| Category or cost | 2026 amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled, region A | 4463 CHF gross per month | MEM agreement minimum, paid thirteen times |
| Skilled, region C | 4028 CHF gross per month | Region B: 4192 CHF |
| Unskilled, region A | 4163 CHF gross per month | Regions B and C: 3892 and 3728 CHF |
| SEFRI level certificate | 350 CHF | Optional, the trade is not regulated |
| Jura cantonal minimum wage | 21,40 CHF per hour | Legal floor outside more favourable agreements |
| LAMal health insurance and housing | Variable | Depends on canton, deductible and city |
Documents to attach for a workshop job
- Swiss-format CV with photo
- Mechanics diploma and training curriculum
- SEFRI level certificate
- Employment references detailing machines and responsibilities
- Certificates from CNC or CAM training
- Passport or residence permit
- German language certificate for German-speaking Switzerland
Mistakes that rule out an industrial mechanic
- Using the title industrial mechanic without translating it into polymechanic or production mechanic, so the CV slips past recruiters' filters.
- Accepting the unskilled MEM minimum when your diploma justifies the 300-franc qualification supplement.
- Staying vague about the machines you have used: workshop managers want to know numerical controls, materials and tolerances.
- Applying in Zurich or St. Gallen without any German, when drawings and safety instructions there are written in that language.
- Signing a shift contract without checking the night and on-call premiums provided by the agreement or the company.
Questions from mechanics about Swiss industry
What is the 2026 minimum wage for a skilled industrial mechanic?
In companies covered by the MEM agreement, the monthly minimum for a skilled worker is 4463 francs in region A, 4192 in region B and 4028 in region C, paid thirteen times. Actual salaries often exceed these amounts for experienced CNC setters.
Do all mechanical engineering firms apply the MEM agreement?
No, only signatory companies or members of the associated employer bodies are bound by it. Others follow their own pay policy, subject to cantonal minimum wages such as in Geneva, Neuchâtel or Jura. Ask which agreement applies before signing.
Is my French maintenance bac pro equivalent to a Swiss CFC?
There is no automatic equivalence for this unregulated trade. The SEFRI level certificate compares your diploma with the CFC and helps the employer place you. Experience documented in employment references often counts for more than the title itself.
Can an adult still become a polymechanic with a CFC?
Yes, adults with enough experience in the sector can obtain the CFC through validation of prior learning or direct admission to the qualification procedure. Conditions vary by canton; the cantonal careers guidance office explains the steps.
