Housekeeping, the hidden heart of a hotel
Whether in a Geneva palace hotel or a family-run house in Zermatt, the housekeeping department shapes guest satisfaction. The housekeeper plans which rooms to prepare, checks every departure and works with reception on early arrivals and special requests.
Executive, floor and assistant housekeepers
Large properties separate the executive housekeeper, who owns the budget and the team, from the floor housekeepers who inspect rooms. In mid-sized hotels in Graubünden or the Bernese Oberland, a single person often combines all of these duties.
The CCNT sets the pay benchmark
The national collective employment agreement for hotels and restaurants has been declared generally binding. It sets minimum wages by training level, working hours, the thirteenth salary and rest days, and also covers businesses that are not members of GastroSuisse or HotellerieSuisse.
The CFC in household management
The classic route is a three-year apprenticeship leading to the CFC (Federal VET Diploma) in household management, or the two-year AFP (Federal VET Certificate) as a household assistant. Both cover cleaning, linen, guest care and service, and also lead to care homes and hospitals.
A federal diploma to lead a team
The federal professional diploma for hotel housekeeping managers prepares candidates to run a housekeeping department. It places the holder in the highest CCNT wage category, which is reserved for people who have passed a federal professional examination.
Winter and summer seasons in the resorts
Verbier, Crans-Montana, St. Moritz and Gstaad hire heavily for December to April and June to September. Mountain hotels often provide board and lodging, with fixed-term contracts like those described in our guide to seasonal work in Switzerland.
Managing linen, supplies and budgets
The executive housekeeper negotiates with industrial laundries, monitors stocks of linen and guest amenities, and defends an annual budget. Hotels carrying the Swisstainable label also expect lower consumption of water, cleaning chemicals and plastic across the floors.
Leading multinational teams
Room attendants often come from Portugal, Spain, Eritrea or the Balkans. The housekeeper trains new recruits, draws up rotas that comply with the CCNT and sometimes works with outside cleaning firms, close to the job of a cleaner in Switzerland.
Digital tools in Swiss hotels
Property management systems pass room status between the floors and reception in real time. Using a housekeeping app, logging technical faults and tracking lost property are now part of the skills that hotel chains expect from their housekeeping staff.
Housekeeping beyond the hotel sector
Housekeeping skills are in demand in care homes, private clinics and boarding schools. These employers offer more regular hours than hotels, but fall under other agreements, such as the cantonal collective agreements for the health and social sector in Vaud or Geneva.
Languages expected in each region
In Geneva and Montreux, French with good basic English for guests is often enough. In Graubünden and German-speaking Valais, German is essential to lead the team, while in Ticino Italian remains the everyday working language on the floors.
Moving up to rooms division management
An experienced executive housekeeper can become head of accommodation or rooms division manager, also supervising the hotel receptionist in Switzerland. A higher hospitality school qualification from Lausanne, Lucerne or Thun makes the step into management easier.
How to become a housekeeper in a Swiss hotel
- Earn the CFC in household management or have a foreign hospitality qualification recognised by SEFRI, the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation.
- Build experience as a room attendant and then assistant housekeeper, ideally in a classified hotel.
- Check your permit: L for one season, B for a lasting contract, G for a cross-border worker near Geneva or Basel.
- Prepare a Swiss-style CV with photo, number of rooms managed, team size and the employment references from previous hotels.
- Apply to resort hotels from late summer for the winter season, and from late winter for the summer season.
- Prepare the federal diploma for hotel housekeeping managers to move into the higher CCNT wage category.

| Board and lodging provided | Deduction according to CCNT rates | Common in resorts, check it in the contract |
| LAMal health insurance | Premium depends on canton and deductible | Must be taken out within three months of arrival |
Documents for a housekeeper application
- Swiss-format CV with a recent photo
- Employment references from previous hotels and employers
- CFC, AFP, federal diploma or recognised foreign qualification
- Passport or identity card and any existing residence permit
- German or Italian language certificate depending on the region
- References from executive housekeepers or accommodation managers
What rules out a housekeeping candidate
- Applying for the winter season in November, when resorts have often finalised their housekeeping teams in the autumn.
- Accepting pay below the CCNT minimum for your category without asking for your CFC or federal diploma to be taken into account.
- Neglecting employment references: a Swiss hotel is wary of a career without detailed written references on supervision and quality.
- Answering a luxury hotel advert that asks for application or visa fees up front, a common scam aimed at foreign hotel staff.
- Overlooking the deductions for board and lodging set in the contract, which noticeably reduce the net pay received in a resort.
Questions from housekeepers aiming for Switzerland
Does the CCNT also apply to small hotels?
Yes. The CCNT for hotels and restaurants has been declared generally binding and in principle covers every business in the sector, whatever its size. Exceptions exist for certain members of the owner's family and for a few senior management roles.
Can I work a single season with an L permit?
Yes. EU and EFTA nationals receive an L permit for a contract of less than one year. The hotel reports the hiring and the canton issues the authorisation; for nationals of non-EU countries, the options are very limited.
Is a French housekeeping qualification recognised?
Foreign qualifications at CAP or BTS level can be submitted to SEFRI for an equivalence decision. In hotels, many employers rely mainly on experience and references, but recognition can give access to the matching CCNT wage category.
Do resort hotels provide housing for housekeepers?
Often, especially in the mountains, where accommodation is scarce and expensive during the season. The amount deducted for the room and meals follows the CCNT rules, so check these deductions in the contract before signing it.
